South Crofty Mine Underground Home 2: So, this is the halfway point for the Underground South Crofty set of images. This is in place so the pages do not drop down too deep from the menu selection which I find very frustrating on some websites.
At the end of this section of pages are two “Old workings galleries”. These have photographs of parts of the mine that were off limits to most. Old sections of rotting timbers, collapses, high Radon levels and other hazards. I did not have much time to take photographs but when I did I tried to make them count.
The image below is showing a cutaway of the South Crofty surface and underground workings, these were handed to me on my first underground trip at South Crofty in the early 90’s, they have survived well.

This image is of a site notice that I luckily salvaged from a skip after the mine had closed. South Crofty Mine Underground Galleries

How it survived in the skip I will never know, so much was lost, I remember seeing skips full of rubbish. Now so many buildings have gone it’s only the memories and pictures that survive.
I wish at the time I had realised these images would become so unique. It makes me very proud to think this is my dedication to the Cornish Miner. These memories on film give an idea of his life and work deep underground.
