South Crofty Robinsons Engine House 1

Robinsons Engine House 1: This is the first of the three new galleries looking at Robinson’s Engine.

This page covers the ground floor of the Engine House. It was actually quite spooky in there on my own. So many ghost memories of miners of the past.

Robinsons Engine House 1
South Crofty Mine Robinsons Engine House 1.1 – On walking through the front door of the Engine House the huge 80″ cylinder is directly in front of you. Also in the ceiling is a large diameter steam pipe which brought steam from the boiler house.

South Crofty Mine Robinsons Engine House 1.2 – The base of the cylinder is surrounded by decorative cast iron plates. The cylinder is lagged with white asbestos putty.

South Crofty Mine Robinsons Engine House 1.3 – The plates are interlocking with a interlaced gothic arch moulding.

Cornish Mine Images 1.5 – At the rear of the cylinder is the drivers position.

Cornish Mine Images 1.6 – All the controls are functional. But they had been made with an ornate beauty.

Cornish Mine Images 1.7 – The engine controls had been cleaned of the grease that protected them. However plastic covers the parts that still required cleaning.

Cornish Mine Images 1.8 – Alongside the rear “Plug Door” is the driver’s signal bell.

Cornish Mine Images 1.9 – On the wall beside the doorway is a vacuum gauge. Sadly the mercury tube and the gauge itself has been the victim of some harsh treatment.

Cornish Mine Images 1.10 – Another image of the vacuum gauge. Also in the background is the engine steam pressure gauge.

Cornish Mine Images 1.11 – This is the doorway that leads to the boiler house.

Cornish Mine Images 1.12 – Alongside the door is the steam pressure gauge with the feed pipe from the boiler house. It’s unfortunate that this was smashed by vandals when the Engine House was broken into when the site was abandoned. So lucky I have an image of when it was intact.

Cornish Mine Images 1.13 – A closeup of the Steam Pressure Gauge.

Cornish Mine Images 1.14 – This is the worn stairway that leads to the middle chamber of the Engine House. It’s difficult not to imagining the engine driver of old, walking up and down these stairs.
