Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3: In a separate part of the site there was a sand plant that had been abandoned, known as John Harvey plant. I am not sure how long it has been since it was last used, it’s very difficult to tell in that environment as the metal does seem to age and decay very quickly, the surrounding sand is full of corrosive material.
The John Harvey plant was surrounded by piles of processed sand and I found it a fascinating subject for photography. I make no apology that I have dedicated a page to it, but I think the images are worth it.
Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.1 – The first view of the John Harvey sand processing plant in the China Stone Quarry, the height of the quarry walls in the background give an idea of the size of the place.
Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.2 – These are the two conveyor belts leading from the John Harvey plant.
Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.3 – Looking back at the plant from the end of one of the conveyors.
Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.4 – Climbing up to get this shot was interesting, the fine sand made it almost impossible to gain any purchase and I was slipping around like I was drunk.
Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.5 – The same from the other side, it was a great day for Black and White photography, dark blue skies and patchy cloud.
Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.6 – My favorite image of the John Harvey plant, the area around it was flooded and very muddy and has added to the photograph.
Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.7 – Moving closer in, the metal deterioration on the plant can be clearly seen. It really was a joy to photograph.
Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.8 – This is the plant controller cab, on the left of the image is where the rocks would have been fed into the machine.
Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.9 – The stairs leading to the control cabin made an interesting image.
Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.10 – The control cabin from a different angle, the traffic lights in the background were used by the operator to control the feed into the machine by a front loader.
Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.11 – A close up of the control cabin, in the summer it must have been awful sitting in there.
Great Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.12 – Looking out into the quarry with the piles of processed material.
Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.13 – A low down image of the same conveyor from the catwalk above.
Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.14 – This is looking down the second conveyor towards a large pile of processed sand.
Wheal Prosper Stone Quarry 3.15 – This is the final image on this page, this view is looking across the quarry to the larger processing plant that appears in Gallery 2.
My friend Huw has sadly moved on to another job, I would love to gain access to these workings again. If anyone can help please drop me a line.
